Veterans’ Diseases Associated With Agent Orange

The VA keeps a list of presumptive diseases associated with Agent Orange exposure. Furthermore, the VA has recognized certain cancers and other health problems as presumptive diseases associated with Agent Orange. Veterans and their survivors may be eligible for VA disability benefits if they are suffering from one of the following diseases:

  • Chronic B-cell Leukemias
  • Chloracne
  • Diabetes Mellitus Type 2
  • Hodgkin’s Disease
  • Ischemic Heart Disease

Types of Benefits Available

Veterans do not need to show proof of Agent Orange exposure for VA disability benefits if they fit into one of the two categories:

  • In Vietnam anytime between January 9, 1962 and May 7, 1975, including brief visits ashore or service aboard a ship that operated on the inland waterways of Vietnam
  • In or near the Korean demilitarized zone anytime between April 1, 1968 and August 31, 1971

To show a service connection for one of the diseases that the VA recognizes as a result of Agent Orange Exposure, the application may require:

  • A medical diagnosis
  • Evidence of service in Vietnam or at or near the Korean demilitarized zone within the dates noted above
  • Evidence of exposure to herbicides
  • Medical evidence that the disease began within the deadline

If successful with a VA benefits claim, the types of VA disability benefits available may include health care, disability compensation, benefits for children with birth defects, survivors’ benefits, and other additional benefits.
